About OptaPDF
A free, privacy-first toolkit for everyday PDF and document work — built to be genuinely useful, not to upsell you.
What we do
OptaPDF is a web-based suite of more than 30 PDF and document tools — merging, splitting, compressing, converting, OCR, editing, signing, and protecting files. Everything runs in the browser-to-server flow with no account, no installation, and no watermarks on your output.
Why we built it
Most "free" PDF sites gate the useful parts behind sign-ups, daily limits, or watermarks, then push a subscription. We wanted a tool we'd actually want to use ourselves: open the page, drop a file, get a clean result, and leave. OptaPDF is built and maintained by a small team of software engineers who work with documents daily.
How we keep it free
We keep running costs low by using efficient open-source processing libraries (PyMuPDF, pikepdf, pdfplumber, LibreOffice, Tesseract) on modest infrastructure, and we may show non-intrusive display advertising in the future to cover hosting. We do not sell your files, your data, or your attention. There is no premium tier and no plan to add paywalls to the core tools.
How your files are handled
Uploads are transmitted over HTTPS and processed in temporary server directories. A scheduled cleanup job permanently deletes both uploaded and generated files after 30 minutes, whether or not you downloaded them. We do not review files manually, and processing is fully automated. See our Privacy Policy and Security Policy for the specifics.
Honest about limitations
We believe trustworthy tools are upfront about what they can and can't do. Converting complex layouts between formats (for example, a heavily designed PDF back to an editable Word file) is inherently lossy with any open-source engine, and we'll tell you when a result is an approximation rather than pretending otherwise. If a file can't be processed, we show a clear message instead of a broken page.
The technology
The platform runs on a Node.js/Express web layer with a dedicated Python processing engine, queued through Redis for reliability under load. The frontend is deliberately lightweight so pages load fast on any device, including mobile.
